be’ah and OQ Trading partner to produce renewable biogas and bio-CO₂ from organic waste, advancing Oman’s clean energy goals.
Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be'ah) and OQ Trading have partnered to develop a national project for the production of biogas (biomethane) and bio-carbon dioxide from waste organic material recovered at landfills and upcoming biofacilities operated by be'ah. This collaboration is significant since it reflects a great step forward in waste management and recycling, where waste from organic material is turned into valuable renewable energy products.
The project will make use of around 20 million cubic meters of biogas generated from be'ah-managed sites, where the gas will be in the form of some 40% biomethane—a renewable source of energy—and 60% bio-CO₂. The two byproducts are of value for application in green industrial processes, showing a potential circular economy situation where waste is transformed into energy.
Under the agreement, the partners will collaborate on technical and economic feasibility studies, infrastructure studies, and establishing commercial prospects for the project's products. The master plan is designed to support local investments and closely align with the economic growth and sustainability objectives of Oman Vision 2040.
The alliance combines be'ah's international assets and waste management expertise with OQ Trading's historical international experience across energy markets.
Together, the union is likely to further boost Oman's status as a regional hub for clean energy and highlight the potential for waste management solutions in supporting the country's broader environmental ambitions.
Oman be'ah CEO, Engineer Tariq Ali Al Amri, described the project as an important milestone in energy recovery from organic waste, cutting down on emissions and providing alternative energy sources. OQ Trading Executive Director, Talib Al Maawali, highlighted its strategic significance in diversifying Oman's energy matrix and reaching carbon neutrality in 2050.
