ChatGPT data to be stored in India, supporting compliance and user control.
OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, has said that it will, from now on keep data of its users based in India within the country. This is for users of ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and the OpenAI API platform. The change is meant to assist businesses in complying with India's data sovereignty regulations, which mandate companies to host some forms of data in the country.
For Indian users of ChatGPT Enterprise and ChatGPT Edu, this means that all chats, files uploaded, and material—text, image, or visual — are now being stored in data centers within India. This provides more compliance with Indian regulations and greater company control over data.
India has become OpenAI’s second-largest market, and its user base tripled by 2024. During his visit to India in February, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman praised the country’s rapid adoption of artificial intelligence. He said India is contributing to the entire AI ecosystem — from chips to applications — and encouraged further growth in the sector.
OpenAI further reported that customers who utilize its API platform are able to opt for where their data is stored when they create a new project and choose the preferred region. In addition to India, the same data storage possibilities are now open in Japan, Singapore, and South Korea. Europe already has this system up and running.
OpenAI officials recently met with Indian government representatives and tech policy organizations to talk about their products and the nation's increasing relevance in their international strategy. The firm stated that data residency is part of its larger initiative to provide robust privacy, security, and compliance features to users. Numerous prominent organizations throughout Asia, including Kakao, SoftBank, Grab, and Singapore Airlines, are already utilizing OpenAI products.
