UAE Provides Free Hotels and Meals to Thousands of Stranded Passengers amid Airspace Closures.
The closure of UAE airspace due to the heightening conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel left thousands of passengers grounded across the United Arab Emirates and the wider Gulf region towards the end of February 2026. As a result, the UAE government introduced a plan to offer free hotels, food, and rebooking for affected passengers with the aim of easing the situation and sustaining the position of the UAE as a global aviation hub.
The sudden closure of airspace across Iran, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain, and the UAE resulted in the suspension of over 1,200 flights across the world, according to available aviation data. The major airlines affected by the Middle East flight cancellations in February 2026 crisis include Emirates and Etihad Airways. It has been established that affected passengers will enjoy the free hotel stay for stranded passengers plan by the UAE government authorities while the airlines introduced flexible booking options via the Emirates flight suspension March 2026 plan.
The General Civil Aviation Authority announced that the airports and airlines had worked together to reroute the flights and speed up the rescheduling process. “Passenger safety remains the top priority, and all hosting costs will be covered,” the authority announced. Emirates airline has also requested passengers not to proceed to the airport without a confirmed booking and is offering free rebooking or refunding of tickets for travel up until mid-March.
This has also demonstrated how geopolitical tensions can bring the world's major transit points, which include Dubai and Abu Dhabi and are significant for the connection between Europe, Asia, and Africa, to a complete standstill. Flights are expected to resume as the airspace reopens.
