New 77MW reactor boosts investor confidence as NuScale leads nuclear energy future.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved NuScale Power's second small modular reactor (SMR) design on Thursday, which sparked interest among retail traders. The new reactor, with 77 megawatts, will be ready for deployment in 2030.
NuScale became the first U.S. company to receive regulatory approval for an SMR. The tiny nuclear reactors would be deployed next to factories or data centers to generate firm, clean power. The approval marks a positive turn for nuclear energy in the United States, especially as the demand for electricity continues to grow.
NuScale is honored to have fulfilled the NRC's rigorous requirements, according to Carrie Fosaaen, vice president of regulatory affairs and services. She added that the approval is proof of NuScale as a leader in the growing SMR market.
John Hopkins, the CEO of NuScale, told Bloomberg that the company is already collaborating with developer Entra1 and is in discussions with many clients to construct new nuclear power facilities. Later this year, the deal is expected to be finalized.
Nuclear power support increases with both political parties favoring its development. Among the factors contributing to its popularity are the energy demands of data centers and the need for renewable energy. Last Monday, President Donald Trump issued executive orders supporting SMR construction.
Since January 2025, NuScale's stock has increased by 77.6%. There is a strong retail sentiment on Stocktwits, as most users are certain that SMRs will support artificial intelligence and technical infrastructure in the future.
