New system enhances cargo tracking, real-time data sharing, and fleet efficiency worldwide.
World shipping conglomerate A.P. Moller - Maersk has begun deploying a new Internet of Things (IoT) platform named OneWireless on 450 of its ships. They include all the vessels that belong to Maersk, as well as over 100 vessels that it charters for specific durations. The platform's objective is to enhance real-time data exchange and upgrade the digital functionalities utilized in shipping activities.
OneWireless is designed to support thousands of IoT devices on a single vessel. The devices can assist in monitoring cargo in real-time, offer richer data, and enhance the efficiency of the entire fleet. According to Kjeld Dittmann, Head of Vessel and Cargo Connectivity at Maersk, the corporation is moving from slower 2G networks to faster 4G technologies. This shift will enable one to get the cargo updates more frequently and provide improved information regarding ship operations.
Additionally, the new technology will improve supply chain visibility. It will be compatible with cutting-edge wireless technologies like LTE broadband, Cat-M, and NB-IoT. Whether a vessel is on the high seas, at a port, or in transit on land, freight can be monitored with the same system. OneWireless is also adaptable enough to coexist with IoT systems offered by Maersk's customers, so long as they are based on accepted standards.
Maersk has worked with a number of tech companies, including Onomondo, Nokia, 42com Sat, Complea, and Zededa, to develop this platform. Hardware required for the upgrade will be fitted during normal port calls. The complete implementation is anticipated to be completed by the first quarter of 2026.
Through this upgrade, Maersk intends to make global shipping smarter, faster, and more efficient for all parties concerned.
