Virat Kohli Bids Farewell to Test Cricket After a Legendary 14-Year Run

Kohli ends red-ball journey, will focus on ODIs and 2027 World Cup.

The announcement of Virat Kohli's retirement from Test cricket is a significant event for Indian cricket. The news had come in the wake of Indian captain Rohit Sharma retiring from the red-ball game just days before. Kohli posted his heartfelt message on Instagram, announcing that he would not play Test cricket for India anymore.

Kohli debuted in Test cricket 14 years ago and has been among India's greatest and most dedicated red-ball players. His decision comes amidst the current Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had apparently asked him to postpone his decision, particularly with India's coming Test series in England later this month. Even so, Kohli opted to retire on his own terms.

In his moving note, Kohli stated, "It's been 14 years since I first put on the baggy blue in Test cricket. I never thought the journey this format would take me on." He spoke of his profound respect for Test cricket, referring to it as a format that tested and molded him as an individual.

He added that playing in whites held a personal and special place in his heart. “It’s not easy to step away, but it feels right. I’ve given it everything,” he wrote.

While retiring from Tests, Kohli announced that he will remain playing One Day Internationals (ODIs) and is targeting the 2027 ODI World Cup. His retirement brings an end to an era in Indian Test cricket, as he became synonymous with an aggressive style, iconic centuries, and leadership on the field.

Fans worldwide are in tears, commemorating his legacy and deeds for Indian cricket. With the words "#269, signing off," Kohli concluded his post, referring to his Test cap number.
