Project aims to improve safety, comfort, and infrastructure for desert highway travelers.
Granite, a US based construction company has received a $38 million contract from the California Department of Transportation to upgrade the Coachella area's Cactus City Rest Area. The work will start in July 2025 and be completed by September 2026.
The project will involve demolishing existing buildings, earthwork, grading, and the installation of new drainage. It will also entail paving ramps and car parks and constructing new facilities for travelers. The aim is to make a cleaner, safer, and more comfortable stopover for people along the highway.
The job will be paid for with both state and federal government funds and will be tacked onto Granite's order book for the second quarter. Approximately 21,000 tons of hot-mix asphalt will be used to pave the ramps and parking spaces will be furnished by Granite's Desert Cities Asphalt Plant, located close by. The project site is only 20 miles away from Granite's regional office in the Coachella Valley, an important contract area.
Granite is also developing several other similar projects to enhance roadside rest stops. Bill Moore, Granite's Vice President of Regional Operations, stated that the company is committed to expanding and diversifying its business in this area. He added that Granite is developing a similar project at the John Wilkie Rest Area on Interstate 40.
Besides the Cactus City project, Granite recently obtained other large California contracts. A month ago, the company signed a $66 million contract to upgrade the Caldwell Avenue interchange along State Route 99 in Visalia. Granite won a $78 million contract in February to replace a 320-foot-long bridge in Orange County, California.
