Disney honors female animators at Animayo with an exhibition that highlights their creative storytelling effect and artistic heritage.
One of Spain's leading animation festivals, Animayo Gran Canaria, has selected Walt Disney Animation Studios as its official sponsor for its 20th edition. To mark this milestone, Disney is bringing a special exhibition titled "Whimsy & Wonder," celebrating the powerful role women have played in shaping its animated storytelling over the past century.
The exhibition showcases the vibrant creativity, emotional depth, and artistic vision of female artists who have left an indelible mark on Disney animation, from pioneers like Mary Blair, known for her bold use of color in the 1950s, to contemporary visionaries behind Frozen, Encanto, and the upcoming Moana 2.
Six well-known female artists from Walt Disney Animation Studios, who have all contributed significantly to some of the studio's most cherished productions, will have their work on display. Spanish-Andorran visual development artist Lorelay Bové has contributed to films like Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph, and The Princess and the Frog. She was also an associate production designer on the Oscar-winning Encanto. Experienced production designer Lisa Keene has influenced the visual worlds of both contemporary and classic films, such as Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and the most current film, Wish.
In addition to serving as Wish's associate production designer, Griselda Sastrawinata-Lemay helped create the visuals for Moana, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Encanto. As in a leadership of story of Zootopia and Ralph Breaks the Internet, Emmy-winning filmmaker Josie Trinidad contributed to the development of the animated blockbusters' narrative structures. As part of the festival, Lorelay Bové will appear in person, offering a masterclass, presenting her artwork, and mentoring young animators through a portfolio review session, continuing Disney’s legacy of motivating the upcoming generation of animators in the field of entertainment.
