Vodafone's IoT milestone supports smart tech for health, sustainability, and real-time data analysis.
Vodafone has connected its 200 millionth Internet of Things device which is a part of a global network of smart equipment and devices that detect earthquakes, floods, and fires; safeguard endangered animals and keep an eye on people's health.
This milestone was reached by a medical monitor that Vodafone connected to its globally managed IoT network, giving clinicians direct access to critical data regarding a patient's cardiac health and specific vital signs. An in-car navigation unit mounted on the windscreen was the first of Vodafone's 200 million Internet of Things devices and it was connected in 2009.
Over 200 million IoT connections have been added to Vodafone's network in the past five years with over 25% of those connections being in Germany. Organizations investing in new digital technology to increase efficiency, fortify supply chains, monitor assets, and gather data for analysis have been the main drivers of this rise. For example, IoT devices with Vodafone connectivity are used to track the amount, quality and movement of coal from 200 mines around South Africa; in Europe, they are also used to track water and forest fires.
Businesses may run more sustainably and effectively thanks to IoT. More than half of all connections, according to Vodafone, allow users to directly lower their emissions. These include the capacity to analyze energy consumption in smart buildings, automate monitoring of energy usage across national electricity grids, and identify and control traffic bottlenecks.
At the point of manufacture, Vodafone is also incorporating its IoT SIM straight into a device's circuitry. Known as iSIM, it streamlines procedures, lowers expenses, and automates network service deployment. Because of this, the technology works especially well for large-scale Internet of Things deployments, such as smart meters or smart labels that follow packages during their route. Vodafone's global SIM cards provide users with safe, dependable, and legal connectivity wherever they go.
