SASSA grants increase in payments for elderly, disabled and veterans address maladministration and testing delays.
This week at the April 2025 awards from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) will be distributed as Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced greater social grant amounts for the year, Sassa grant beneficiaries will begin receiving higher than usual payments on April 1, 2025.
The agency manages over 19 million grant payments Including the Older Persons Pension Grant, Disability Grant, War Veterans Grant, Care Dependency Grant, Foster Child Grant, Child Support Grant, Child Support Grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.
News of the South African Social Security Agency's award increases this month, however, came practically second to this. Above-inflation hikes (5.9% vs. 4.9% in 2024) to protect the country's elderly were larger than expected after the Finance Minister postponed his 2025 Budget Speech. For citizens over 60 who are no longer able to sustain themselves financially, the government has an obligation to provide.
Additionally, the organization is fighting maladministration which results in 75,000 deceased recipients receiving millions of dollars in handouts every month. However for SASSA Old-Age Grants and beyond the agency has at least released formal payment dates till April 2025 (see below). As a result, R2 310 will be given to people aged 60 to 74 this week. Additionally, on Tuesday, April 2, 2025, R2 330 will be given to those over 75. Disability recipients will receive R2 310, and starting this month, our remaining War Veterans will receive the higher R2 330 stipend.
The April 2025 SASSA Old-Age Grants are asset and means tested, therefore new applicants should be aware of this. The purpose of this approach is to guarantee that the stipend is exclusively given to elderly pensioners who are not financially independent. Additionally, don't divert valuable public funds from people who truly require them.
