Johnson calls for stronger security guarantees for Ukraine to prevent future Russian attacks.
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has strongly denounced former U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed peace plan for Ukraine, contending that Ukraine would not benefit from its sacrifices under Trump's terms.
In a post on X, Johnson criticized Trump for his response to ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Trump recently hinted that Ukraine could have to accept Russia's takeover of Crimea in a peace agreement. The proposition has sparked fears, particularly following a deadly Russian airstrike that hit Ukraine's capital city of Kyiv and other cities, killing dozens of people, including children.
Johnson, who was a vocal advocate of Ukraine, contended that in Trump's peace plan, Russia would be rewarded for its aggressive behavior, such as retaining the land it has captured and having control over Ukraine's future. He claimed that the peace plan would remove sanctions from Russia and enable them to rebuild their military, while Ukraine would gain little more than the ability to share its natural resources with America.
He asked what was to be won by Ukraine in three years defending itself against Russian invasion. Johnson contended that Ukraine's cause for freedom and democracy was being overlooked and the peace agreement didn't have a credible strategy in place to secure Ukraine from possible future Russian action.
Johnson demanded a long-term security assurance for Ukraine, which should be offered by the U.S., the U.K., and other Western nations to secure Ukraine's future safety.
Trump, in turn, also criticized Russia's airstrikes against Kyiv, although his comments on the peace agreement are still contentious, as critics say his strategy might benefit Russia at the cost of Ukraine.
