India's semiconductor industry is set to grow significantly through government initiatives, competitions, and strategic partnerships.
India's chip business is poised for enormous growth with a series of programs initiated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The government has been collaborating with over 300 institutions, including 250 higher education institutes and 65 start-ups, in developing a robust ecosystem for designing semiconductor chips. The Chips to Start-up (C2S) Programme, which is one of the big initiatives under these projects, aims to develop 85,000 industry-ready professionals with the domain expertise of semiconductor chip design. The program offers hands-on exposure to design, fabrication, and testing, developing a skilled talent pool prepared for the future of semiconductor technology.
In a recent contest, over 10,000 students participated in the Analog and Digital Design Hackathons, where 2,210 teams from across India competed. After tough challenges, the grand finale saw 40 teams competing for best honors. Team Intuition of IIT Delhi and Team Analog Edge of NIT Rourkela were some of the winners of the Analog Design Hackathon, while Team RISCB of IIT Bombay and Team Silicon Scripters of Saveetha Engineering College were the winners of the Digital Design Hackathon.
In a bid to increase the semiconductor resilience of India, the government commissioned Vervesemi Microelectronics Pvt. Ltd. to come up with a BLDC Motor Controller Chip. At 90% local components and unit cost under $1.50, the chip is a massive leap towards the semiconductor independence of India.
Moreover, the government has introduced the Digital India RISC-V (DIR-V) Grand Challenge, which is scheduled to be launched on April 10. The challenge will be aimed at developing innovative applications based on open-source RISC-V designs with the help of major industry stakeholders such as Renesas and Bharat Electronics. These programs are indicative of India's increased focus on becoming a world leader in semiconductor design and innovation.
