AEMO Services shares strategies for winning bids on renewable capacity and storage projects.
Successful strategies have been provided to developers submitting competitive solicitations for firm renewable capacity and energy storage. Thimo Mueller, general manager for commercial and AEMO Services, stated that bids are evaluated based on four primary criteria during his remarks at the Energy Storage Summit Australia 2025. Mueller mentioned tenders that are being held for delivery partners to Australian states by AEMO Services, an autonomous component of the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).
According to Mueller, AEMO Services is "focused on bridging ambition and action" through the New South Wales (NSW) Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap's energy storage procurements of various duration technologies as well as the countrywide Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) for renewables coupled with storage. Coordinated by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water (DCCEEW), the Office of the Capacity Investment Scheme of the national Commonwealth government launched the CIS.
According to Mueller, it is crucial to emphasize that the NSW Roadmap sets minimum goals of 2GW/16GWh by 2030 and 28GWh by 2034. In a keynote address to kick off the first day of the conference, he stated, "If we identify an increased need for reliability in New South Wales, we can procure more on top of this." In total, five tenders for a total of 4GW/25GWh of energy storage have been awarded across the two schemes. The purpose of the tenders is to assist investors in removing obstacles to revenue certainty.
Long-duration energy storage (LDES) resources having a dispatch period of eight hours or longer at full-rated power are included in the NSW Roadmap. 18 GWh of advanced compressed air energy storage (A-CAES), pumped hydro energy storage (PHES), and long-duration lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery energy storage system (BESS) projects have previously received Long-Term Energy Service Agreements (LTESAs).
