Volkswagen enhances quality assurance with ZEISS PiWeb software, streamlining reporting and data analysis.
With ZEISS PiWeb software, the company has greatly improved its quality assurance processes and streamlined the reporting and measurement analysis for it. The need to replace its outdated, proprietary software to gain a user-friendly, extendable, and secure solution to manage new demands in data security and reporting efficiency paved the way for the move. The choice was made for ZEISS PiWeb, as it is easy to use, stable, and can handle various measuring technologies, whether tactile, optical, or CT-based, regardless of the manufacturer.
Rolled out across 15 Volkswagen sites, the software has centralized data from over 20 measuring machines at the Wolfsburg site alone. By consolidating data from various sources, ZEISS PiWeb enables Volkswagen's quality assurance teams to generate reports much faster than was possible earlier, as tasks that were earlier time-consuming and laborious are now completed in seconds. For instance, reports for trunk lids, which earlier used to take hours, are now processed instantly, enabling quicker responses to manufacturing deviations.
ZEISS PiWeb's interactive, 3D visual reporting capabilities make it even easier. Engineers like Dominik Koch can easily create dynamic, detailed reports with a few clicks and then adjust them in a flash as manufacturing needs change. The flexibility to change inspection plans on the fly ensures that Volkswagen can always meet the high quality standards set in real time.
With the system fully implemented now, Volkswagen plans to take things up a notch as it seeks to tap into data to implement quality assurances of greater complexities. This ranges from full automation on out-of-tolerance alarms cross-site synchronization of assessments and more advanced statistical analyses. The longer term would see virtual testing and analysis of parts through cloud-based solutions, thereby reducing waste and even CO2 emissions by doing away with the transportation of parts.
This step is a good approach toward making the processes of Volkswagen future-proof quality assurance processes as it prepared disruptive business models while making its firm more competitive.
