Citrix issues warning about update failure for devices with Session Recording Agent 2411, offers workaround.
Citrix has issued a warning about a compatibility issue with the January 2025 Windows security updates for users running Citrix Session Recording Agent (SRA) version 2411. Microsoft’s latest cumulative updates for Windows 10 (KB5049981) and Windows 11 (KB5050009) include critical patches for several security vulnerabilities, including zero-day flaws. However, devices with SRA 2411 installed may face installation failures during the update process.
According to Microsoft, affected devices may download and begin the update installation correctly, but when restarting to complete the process, an error message appears, stating, “Something didn’t go as planned. No need to worry – undoing changes.” The update process will then revert to the previous version, leaving devices unprotected against the newly patched vulnerabilities.
This issue is believed to affect a limited number of organizations, as Citrix SRA 2411 was only released in late November 2024. The problem stems from SRA 2411 preventing certain drivers from being updated during the Windows update installation. Microsoft and Citrix are collaborating to resolve the issue, but Citrix has already released a workaround to help users in the interim.
Citrix recommends stopping the Citrix Session Recording Monitoring service before attempting to install the Windows updates. Users can do this by accessing the Services Management Console (services.msc), stopping the service, and disabling it temporarily. Once the update is successfully installed, the service can be re-enabled.
Citrix has also outlined the steps to disable and re-enable the service using PowerShell or Command Prompt. With such workaround in place, users can proceed with installing the January 2025 Windows updates and lock up their systems against the latest vulnerabilities.
