SpaceX's upcoming mission will carry the fastest AI computer ever launched, featuring cutting-edge shielding for space durability.
SpaceX is set to make history with its Transporter 11 mission by launching the first space-hardened Nvidia Jetson Orin NX AI GPU. This groundbreaking technology aims to demonstrate the resilience of advanced AI computing in space environments. The mission, scheduled to launch as early as August 16, will see the GPU protected by a novel nanocomposite shielding material developed by Cosmic Shielding Corporation (CSC).
This shielding, a polymer embedded with nanoparticles, has been tested on Earth and aboard the International Space Station. Its effectiveness will be put to the test in space, where ionized particles and cosmic rays pose significant threats to electronics. The GPU will be housed in a cubesat built by Aethero, a company specializing in space-rated computers.
Yanni Barghouty, CSC's cofounder and CEO, highlighted that the primary goal is to validate the AI GPU's operation with minimal errors in orbit. A successful test could revolutionize satellite technology by enabling advanced AI capabilities in space, including real-time image analysis and space debris management.
The use of such technology could extend the lifespan of space missions and reduce costs. This development is seen as a crucial step towards integrating modern AI hardware into space operations, aligning with Moore's Law and enhancing efficiency both on Earth and in orbit.
