Users report disruptions, Meta assures services are almost fully restored after technical difficulties.
Meta's popular social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, faced significant service disruptions on December 11, 2024, with thousands of users reporting issues across the platforms. The outages began around 12:30 p.m. EST, peaking with over 100,000 Facebook users and tens of thousands on Instagram reporting problems through DownDetector. Users encountered errors when trying to access Facebook, with some seeing the message, "We're working on getting this fixed as soon as we can."
As late afternoon gave way to evening, Meta released a statement confirming the fixing of problems. It informed that "99% of the way there" were now but final checks needed before it could completely restore its service. The outages were recorded at more than 1,200 on Facebook and over 1,900 on Instagram, even as 5:30 EST approached. Other apps with reported problems like WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads recorded reductions in outages also reported.
Meta's status page also reflected that several business tools, including Facebook Ads Manager and the Messenger API for Instagram, were impacted as well-the largest disruptions in Meta's suite of platforms. The company then posted on X (previously Twitter), thanking the users for their patience while apologizing for the inconvenience caused.
This outage came after an earlier global disruption in March 2024 that Meta's platforms saw because of technical issues. Though both Microsoft and Reddit recently went through interruptions, the speedy response shown by Meta emphasizes its attempts at minimizing prolonged down time.
Meta, a leading player in social media and digital marketing, continues to dominate the tech landscape with over 2.8 billion active users across its platforms.
