Iffco's new product promises reduced urea and DAP consumption with innovative nano technology

Fertilizer major Iffco has developed a new nano NPK nutrient, expanding its innovative range of nano fertilizers. The cooperative has sought government approval to launch this nano NPK product, which will be produced in granule form at its Kandla unit. Once approved, Iffco plans to sell the 5 kg bag of nano NPK at Rs 950.

Iffco's Managing Director, U S Awasthi, said that the new product would reduce the consumption of urea and di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) considerably and thus help in sustainable farming. Iffco had already made significant inroads in the market with nano liquid urea, launched in June 2021, and nano liquid DAP, introduced in April 2023. Both products employ advanced nano technology to increase nutrient uptake and minimize wastage.

Iffco has invested heavily in research and development, with a total of around Rs 2,000 crore spent since 2017 on these path-breaking products, which include the setting up of production plants and branding activities. The cooperative is also investing Rs 200 crore annually to promote nano-urea and nano-DAP, educating farmers on how to use them along with traditional fertilizers.

Nano fertilizers are much more concentrated and efficient compared to the conventional fertilizers. For example, one bottle of nano liquid DAP is equivalent to 500 ml, while one bag of granular DAP is 50 kg. Similarly, one bottle of nano urea is equivalent to a 45 kg bag of traditional urea.

Iffco is currently producing 16 crore bottles of nano liquid urea and 7 crore bottles of nano liquid DAP per year, that is, a huge stride towards the modernization of the agricultural sector.
