Architectural innovation meets Xi'an’s rich history with cascading volumes and ceramic-clad structures in new commercial hub.

Heatherwick Studio has completed the Xi'an Centre Culture Business District in Xi'an, China, a landmark development that combines modern commercial spaces with thoughtful, historical design. Located just south of Xi'an's historic center, the 155,000-square-meter district is an innovative example of sustainable urban planning and architecture.

Inside this district, one will find the Xi'an Tree-a 57 meters tall vertical park that can be considered an elevated garden featuring 56 stepped terraces or "elevated petals," all inspired by the Silk Road's biomes. Every garden of these 56 has a calm ambiance that allows its guests to feel peaceful away from the chaos in the surrounding commercial area. It connects residents, visitors, and workers because of a central staircase found inside the park.

The inspiration of Heatherwick Studio's design comes from Xi'an's long history of ceramic craftsmanship. More than 100,000 tiles are used on the building façades, which not only add to the sensation but also pay tribute to the city's long history of ceramics. Influenced by the ancient temples around the city, cascading rooftops and tile-clad columns are smoothly made old-new combined.

The district features public spaces, such as lush rooftop gardens, plazas, and interconnected streets. These spaces encourage social interaction, with large glazed windows offering panoramic views of the central plaza and its park. The thoughtful integration of natural elements with contemporary design fosters an inviting environment that reflects the city's heritage while embracing future growth.

The Xi'an Centre Culture Business District stands as a prime example of how urban development can combine functionality, sustainability, and cultural preservation. This innovative project highlights Heatherwick Studio's commitment to creating dynamic, human-centered urban spaces.
