DeAndre Hopkins shines as Chiefs maintain undefeated record in a methodical, grind-it-out win.
Kansas City, Missouri – November 5, 2024: The Kansas City Chiefs improved to 8-0 on the season with a 30-24 overtime win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a Monday Night Football matchup that was as much about strategy and execution as it was about star power. Patrick Mahomes, despite tweaking his ankle mid-game, led his team with composure, guiding the Chiefs on several crucial drives that wore down Tampa Bay’s defense and ultimately secured the win in overtime.
While the Chiefs’ explosive offense from previous seasons has given way to a more methodical attack this year, it was clear on Monday night that this strategy is working. Kansas City converted 12 of 18 third-down attempts, with Mahomes once again showing his ability to make plays under pressure. A key moment came when Mahomes, despite his injury, threw a precise 7-yard touchdown pass to Samaje Perine. Additionally, Mahomes found tight end Travis Kelce 14 times for 100 yards, including a key connection late in the game.
The Chiefs introduced a new wrinkle to their offense - a slow and steady 8:26-minute drive that literally ate up valuable game clock and ended in a DeAndre Hopkins touchdown. The Kansas City ground game, led by Kareem Hunt, had been equally effective, as Hunt scored on the game-winning touchdown overtime after a 10-play, 70-yard march that wore down the Buccaneer defense. The final plays—Hunt's physical 2-yard run and a sharp pass to Kelce—were something of a fitting conclusion, as the Chiefs controlled this game from start to finish.
For the Buccaneers, missing star receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin left more burden on the shoulders of quarterback Baker Mayfield, who mostly relied on tight end Cade Otton. Otton, who shone brightly the week before his performance did not wane as he took a few vital catches and even orchestrated two touchdown drives. Though an outstanding improviser, Mayfield linked up with Ryan Miller for an important touchdown; yet, Tampa Bay could not cope with the clock management done by Kansas City in the latter half.
DeAndre Hopkins had barely been with the Chiefs a week when he rewarded this organization with eight catches, 86 yards, and two touchdowns. This far improved from his quiet debut he proved in this game. Sharp routes, contested catches really proved helpful for Mahomes having an available target tonight. The Chiefs' defense, led by coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, had a challenging night but still managed to hold Tampa Bay’s offense in check, particularly in the run game. Despite struggling to generate consistent pressure on Mayfield, the Chiefs limited the Buccaneers to fewer than 300 yards of total offense and made key stops when necessary.
The Chiefs' victory, powered by a methodical offense and timely defensive plays, not only kept their undefeated streak alive but also demonstrated their ability to win in a variety of ways this season.
