Google Acknowledges Issues with Android 15 Private Space on Wear OS Devices

Users may experience unexpected Private Space notifications on Wear OS devices, with fixes expected in future updates.

Google has confirmed that there are known issues affecting Android 15’s Private Space feature when used with Wear OS devices. The company recently updated its support documentation to alert users that notifications from Private Space apps may appear on a paired smartwatch, despite the feature’s intention to keep private and work-related notifications separate from regular ones.

A Private Space, apparently designed to keep applications and notifications private or out of sight on the primary user interface of an Android device, is apparently designed to create a private, isolated space on Android phones. Still, at least some users who wear Wear OS find that the applications they have installed in the Private Space feed them notifications on the wrists. According to Google, that is not supposed to happen- apparently the watch is not supposed to be hit by the notification from the Private Space.

More importantly, the bug may also be found when Private Space on a user's phone is unlocked and sends notifications onto the smartwatch. Of course, these notifications probably get an icon badge with the description "work profile," symbolizing a collision with Android's Work Profile feature due to its purpose of enterprise usage and separation of data but conceptually similar to Private Space. According to Google, that might result in an unsuspecting "work profile" tab appearing in the Wear OS app even if no Work Profile has been configured on their phone.

There is no timeline provided by Google for solving these issues, but a normal expectation is that they will be fixed when the next Android or Wear OS update comes. In the meantime, users are told that these bugs could interfere with what's supposed to be the separated siloing of personal and work notifications between phone and wearable.
