Mississippi College announces a name change to Mississippi Christian University and discontinues its football program

Significant changes were announced by Mississippi College (MC) during its Board of Trustees meeting on November 18, including a significant change of the college's name as well as the athletic program. The college will become Mississippi Christian University, as it heads toward its bicentennial in 2026, marking a transformative step in the evolution of the institution. President Blake Thompson believes this new name reflects the mission of the college and its Christian commitment to making sure that MC will be recognized for its future great academic excellence and faith-based values for the next 200 years.

As part of planned rebranding, the college will, from yesterday, already start efforts to transition to the new name, scheduled to officially take effect in 2026. The name change is seen as part of a broader strategy to align the identity of the institution with its Christian foundation in a bid to help secure future growth and influence in the academic community.

In addition to the renaming, the college has approved a preliminary plan for academic reorganization that should enhance its educational offerings. These include promoting the Department of Christian Studies to be an interdisciplinary unit with a focus on the school's commitment to Christian education. The reorganization will put together the School of Christian Studies and Arts with the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The School of Education will also be changed to the School of Education and Human Science, representing an even broader mission within human development.

The college will discontinue its intercollegiate football program. The news has elicited varied responses, including one source who characterized the announcement as a difficult decision. Athletic Director Kenny Bizot referred to the program's legacy and how it was integral to the school's history. He assured that the college will support current football players in continuing their education at Mississippi College or seeking transfers to other institutions. The reorganization and realignment of the athletic department are all part of a broader strategic vision that will ensure the college's continued success in the years to come.
