Disappointment mounts as Dallas struggles to find consistency in the early NFL season.
The Dallas Cowboys are reeling after a narrow 30-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, leaving them with a disappointing 3-4 record. Coach Mike McCarthy expressed frustration over the team's performance despite a strong week of preparation, emphasizing the need for improvement as they move forward.
The Cowboys' current record is reminiscent of their struggles in 2018 when they also started 3-4 with a healthy Dak Prescott. At that time, a midseason trade for wide receiver Amari Cooper revitalized the team, leading to a playoff berth. However, only five players from that roster are still active, highlighting a shift in personnel and expectations.
Dallas, however played only for the third quarter: in the period visitors outscored the team by 21-0. By that time difference reached 27:10. Prescott completed only 25 of 38 throws for 243 yards, but called himself frustrating because he is the first Cowboys quarterback since Troy Aikman who, in 1992 led a team to throwing picks in three consecutive matches.
Still, Prescott remains optimistic. "We know what it takes in this league," he said about the upcoming game against the Atlanta Falcons, who are leaders in the NFC South division. Some other strong games in his future include facing the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders.
On defense, the Cowboys were hapless against the 49ers, losing their last four, which includes postseason contests to this end. Cornerback Trevon Diggs confronted the press about perceived lack of effort, showing the accumulation frustration in the team's response.
As the Cowboys prepare for their next game, the pressure to turn the season around grows. Defensive back Jourdan Lewis echoed the sentiment: "We can't think about the future. We need to focus on the next game and our next opportunity."
A defining stretch of their season now awaits the Cowboys, who are looking forward to tapping into their capacity and rectifying some of the blunders made during the rest of the season.
