Bill Belichick and Robert Saleh: NFL Coaching Change Impact

Belichick believes Jets' leadership could benefit from a more measured approach to coaching changes.

Bill Belichick shared his thoughts on the New York Jets’ move to fire head coach Robert Saleh just five games into the season during a segment on ESPN's alternate broadcast. Belichick has some history with the Jets and their owner Woody Johnson; he was disapproving that the coaching change came so early in the season.

It's quite early to change the coach," he said, pointing out that over the last ten seasons the Jets have not been able to win more than 30% of their games. The Jets haven't reached the play-offs since the team season of 2010, and for the last few seasons, the franchise was undergoing a sequence of coach changes.

Belichick acknowleged Saleh's efforts in establishing competitive culture within the team. "Coach Saleh did a good job with that program," he said. "They're probably not that far away from winning." Jets are now managed by interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich as they seek to turn a tough season around.

According to Johnson, unfulfilled expectations over the roster of talent were a reason to change. This is another chapter in the Jets' pursuit of winning in this hyper-competitive NFL environment.
