UAE’s New Anti-Money Laundering Strategy

UAE’s Comprehensive Plan to Boost Transparency and Investor Confidence

The United Arab Emirates is set to bolster its fight against financial crime with a robust new anti-money laundering (AML) strategy for 2024-2027. The updated plan, recently approved by the cabinet and overseen by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs, introduces significant reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and strengthening investor confidence.

The strategy, which includes an 11-point action plan, reflects the UAE's commitment to combat money laundering, counter the financing of terrorism (CFT), and address proliferation financing. Key components of the plan involve the establishment of two pivotal committees: the National Committee for Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism, and the Supreme Committee responsible for overseeing the national AML strategy. These bodies are designed to streamline compliance and enforcement, reduce bureaucratic hurdles, and improve communication between businesses and regulatory authorities.

A notable aspect of the new legislation is a focused crackdown on violations within the gold sector, aiming to address issues of transparency and illicit activities. The law also emphasizes enhanced international coordination with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and increased vigilance against emerging threats such as cybercrime and the misuse of virtual assets.

Rukhsar Bano, AML officer at ABH Tax and Accounting Services, highlighted the significance of these reforms, stating, “The new laws will not only boost transparency but also strengthen international regulatory relations, enhancing investor confidence and reducing financial crime risks.”
