SpaceX Launches U.S. Military Payloads for Arctic Connectivity

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket deploys satellites enhancing Arctic communications; first U.S. military payloads hosted on commercial satellites.

SpaceX successfully launched two U.S. military payloads as part of the Arctic Satellite Broadband Mission (ASBM) constellation. The Falcon 9 rocket carried the payloads from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, marking a significant milestone in enhancing Arctic connectivity. This mission, in collaboration with Space Norway, featured satellites built by Northrop Grumman designed to operate in a highly elliptical orbit, catering to both commercial and military communications needs.

The launch is notable as it represents the first deployment of U.S. military payloads on a commercial satellite operated by an international partner. The constellation includes two Enhanced Polar System — Recapitalization (EPS-R) payloads for the U.S. Space Force, extending satellite communications capabilities in the Arctic region. These payloads will support U.S. military operations until the next-generation Protected Tactical SATCOM (PTS) system is introduced in the early 2030s.

The Arctic Satellite Broadband Mission aligns with the Pentagon’s 2024 Arctic Strategy, which emphasizes the importance of leveraging space-based infrastructure to improve operations above 65 degrees North latitude. The ASBM constellation also features payloads for Norway’s armed forces and commercial operator Viasat, demonstrating a successful integration of military and commercial satellite technologies.

Space Norway, managing the satellite infrastructure, aims to enhance both military and commercial communications capabilities in the remote Arctic region.
