GU Unveils Plans for Debut Flagship Store

In tandem with the store opening, GU will launch its U.S. e-commerce platform and mobile app

The parent firm of GU and Uniqlo, Fast Retailing, has announced the opening of GU's first flagship store in the United States. It will be located at 578 Broadway in SoHo, New York City, and will open on September 19. This marks a significant milestone for GU, which is expanding its footprint in North America with a comprehensive retail and digital strategy.

The new flagship store will span two floors, covering 10,225 square feet, and will showcase GU’s diverse range of apparel for men and women, along with a selection of bags, accessories, and shoes. Notable features include the GU NEW U concept, highlighting the latest trends and the MINI edit MAX, which offers meticulously curated collections to enhance styling options. Along with the opening of the store, GU will also launch its U.S. e-commerce platform and mobile app, broadening access to its offerings across the country. This digital expansion is complemented by a new menswear partnership with UNDERCOVER, featuring a range of products designed for all genders.

GU, known for its affordability and appeal to younger consumers, aims to replicate Uniqlo’s success in the U.S. market. Despite its popularity in Japan, GU remains relatively unknown abroad. Fast Retailing’s founder, Tadashi Yanai, has ambitious plans for GU, targeting a significant contribution to the company’s goal of achieving five trillion yen in annual revenue. In line with GU's larger North American expansion plan, the flagship store is a strategic move that comes after a prosperous pop-up shop in SoHo in 2022.
