Rakuten secures significant investment from Macquarie Asset Management and partners, accelerating its path to becoming Japan’s top mobile carrier.
In a strategic move to strengthen its financial standing and accelerate growth, Japanese technology giant Rakuten has sold a significant portion of its mobile network assets to a consortium led by Macquarie Asset Management (MAM). This consortium, which includes the British Columbia Investment Management Corporation, made the acquisition through the Macquarie Asia-Pacific Infrastructure Fund 3.
Rakuten highlighted the importance of securing this long-term, large-scale funding from prominent global infrastructure investors. This move not only diversifies Rakuten’s financing strategies and broadens its investor base but also strengthens the group’s overall financial foundation.
Mickey Mikitani, Chairman and CEO of Rakuten Group, expressed confidence in the initiative, stating, “Rakuten Mobile is already well on its way to profitability. With our new partnership, we aim to build on this momentum, accelerating our path to profitability and positioning ourselves as the leading mobile carrier in Japan.”
Macquarie’s investment in Rakuten Mobile underscores its long-standing involvement in Japan, with over 24 years of investment experience in the country. MAM continues to connect Japanese investors with global opportunities across infrastructure, green investment, and real estate, further solidifying its presence in Japan’s evolving digital landscape.
With this infusion of capital, Rakuten Mobile is poised to not only enhance its network capabilities but also accelerate its journey towards becoming a dominant player in Japan’s competitive mobile market.
