Swiss Startup Led by Women Secures $2.42 Million to Slash Data Center Energy Costs by 20%
Swiss startup Apheros, co-founded by Julia Carpenter and Gaëlle Andreatta, is poised to transform the data center industry with its groundbreaking metal foam cooling solution. Recently, the woman-led company secured £1.85 million ($2.42 million) in funding to accelerate the development and commercialization of its innovative technology, which promises to address the rising energy consumption plaguing data centers.
Apheros' cutting-edge metal foam, crafted using a proprietary powder-based process, boasts completely open porosity, significantly boosting cooling efficiency. Unlike traditional methods, this advanced manufacturing technique ensures consistent quality and avoids the structural weaknesses often seen in cast metal products. Additionally, the foam can be tailored to various metals, including copper, nickel, and stainless steel, to meet the specific needs of different cooling systems.
Focused on liquid cooling, Apheros' solution enhances heat dissipation by encasing data center chips in metal foam, expanding the surface area and improving cooling performance. This technology could deliver up to a 90% increase in heat exchange efficiency, potentially reducing data center cooling energy consumption by 10% to 20%.

With data center energy consumption expected to double by 2026 due to AI and high-performance computing demands, Apheros' breakthrough comes at a critical time.
