Essar Group’s Largest Steel Plant In US History is planned as a $15 billion Iowa steel project, with Mesabi Metallics targeting first production in 2030. President Donald Trump announced the project at the White House on September 28, describing the facility as a major US manufacturing investment.

The facility is planned as part of an integrated mine-to-mill operation. Iron ore from Mesabi Metallics’ newly opened mine in Nashwauk, Minnesota, will move to Iowa for steel production. The first phase is expected to produce 7.5 million tons annually, with capacity eventually reaching about 10 million tons.

Could a Minnesota mine become the backbone of Iowa’s biggest steel project?

That connection is central to the plan. Essar has already invested more than $2.5 billion in the Minnesota operation, while the US Export-Import Bank has announced up to $10 billion in financing support for its expansion. EXIM Chairman John Jovanovic described the mine as the first of its kind to open in the US in more than 50 years.

The scale is equally striking. The White House says the Iowa facility could create 1,750 permanent jobs and support up to 6,000 construction jobs. It also projects about $95 billion in economic impact during construction and the first decade of operation.

Why is Essar building its steel giant in Iowa, not Minnesota?

Reuters reported that the reason for the location was not immediately clear. Electricity costs and access to central US industrial customers could be factors, but Mesabi Metallics has not publicly detailed its complete site-selection rationale.

US President Trump linked the project to his administration’s manufacturing and steel tariff policies, saying, “Our steel industry is roaring back to life.”

According to India Today, Rewant Ruia, Chairman of Mesabi Metallics, thanked US President Donald Trump for supporting the project. Ruia said the Iowa complex would complete a fully integrated American supply chain, connecting domestic iron ore production with US steel manufacturing.

Rewant Ruia said, “With the new steel complex in Iowa, we will complete the fully integrated American supply chain.”
