The approval of UTM SE marks a major shift in Apple’s perspective on emulator apps
In a startling development, Apple has officially approved the UTM SE app for iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS, enabling users to emulate popular software and games on their Apple devices. The tech giant had initially rejected the app and restrained it from being notarized for third-party app stores in the EU.
Developed by a team dedicated to preserving computing history, UTM SE was initially rejected by Apple owing to concerns over user experience. Nevertheless, with the help of the AltStore team and utilizing major advances in emulation technology, the app has now achieved the green light. The app boasts powerful features, including support for VGA mode for graphics and terminal mode for text-only operating systems. It can emulate a wide range of architectures, including x86, PPC, and RISC-V, providing flexibility for users who want to use various legacy software. UTM SE does not include a pre-installed operating system during installation but provides a link to the UTM site where users can find instructions for setting up emulations from Windows XP to Windows 11, as well as downloadable virtual Linux machines. Notably, screenshots from the UTM SE App Store page showcase emulation possibilities, including Mac OS 9.2.1 and DOS. Built based on QEMU, a highly respected emulator in the tech community, UTM SE enables enthusiasts who want to relive their past computing experiences directly on their Apple devices.
The approval of UTM SE marks a major shift in Apple’s perspective on emulator apps, potentially opening the door for retro computing enthusiasts to explore popular software and games on modern iOS platforms.
