Cisco Expands Nvidia Partnership with AI Servers for Data Center Growth

Cisco is expanding its Nvidia-backed infrastructure offering with Supermicro AI servers, targeting rising demand for high-density computing in data centers.

Cisco has expanded its collaboration with Nvidia in response to rising demand for AI infrastructure solutions. The network technology firm will be collaborating with Supermicro to integrate high-density and liquid, as well as air-cooled computing systems, into its Secure AI Factory with Nvidia offering, according to Axios.

The new computing systems are expected to be used on the next-gen Nvidia platforms and will be made available in October. Cisco is planning to sell these computing systems along with its network, security, and observability technologies as a pre-validated system solution to deploy GPU clusters.

According to Jeetu Patel, President and Chief Product Officer at Cisco, the goal is to provide infrastructure for various kinds of AI architectures, including those using the company's frontier models via hyperscalers, open-weight models, on-premises AI, or locally deployed AI.

The move comes as Cisco becomes increasingly focused on the physical infrastructure required to run AI workloads. Whereas many software companies have come under pressure due to shifts in tech spend, Cisco has gained from its exposure to hardware and data center demand. Its stock price has risen by almost 45% year-to-date, Axios reports.

Nevertheless, this strategy puts Cisco in a very competitive space in computing because companies like Nvidia and infrastructure providers such as hyperscalers have taken positions. Patel downplayed worries of competition by arguing that the spaces in which the firms compete are small when compared to those in which they complement each other.

The most recent move made by Cisco shows the firm’s expectations that the demand for AI infrastructure will continue to rise. The firm intends to play a larger part in supporting large-scale AI infrastructures through the combination of computing systems with networking and security. Business Honor believes that Cisco’s AI computing expansion could strengthen its position beyond networking as demand for integrated AI infrastructure grows.
