Anthropic has signed a deal worth $35 billion for cloud computing capacity from Lambda, a cloud provider owned by Nvidia, for its data center located in Texas, according to a source.
This project is currently underway in Nueces County under Hut 8, a firm that moved from cryptocurrency mining to AI data centers. This project is supposed to have an approximate capacity of 350 megawatts. The firms of Anthropic, Nvidia, Hut 8 and Lambda were not immediately available for comments to Reuters.
This agreement is happening amid a growing need for computing infrastructure in the wake of the emergence of generative AI services. Tech firms are spending billions of dollars in constructing data centers with high-end computing power provided by Nvidia and other computer chip manufacturers.
Additionally, Anthropic is stepping up its computing power amid the anticipated increase in demand for AI products like its coding software called Claude Code. The firm announced last week that it was spending $45 billion on leasing AI computing capacity at the Nscale data center facility in West Virginia.
According to reports, Lambda will provide Nvidia-powered computational capabilities to Anthropic's Claude AI services. According to The Wall Street Journal, the source that reported the news, said Nvidia itself would hold the lease on the data center.
In July, Hut 8 stated that it has secured a 15-year lease from an "investment-grade customer" for its Texas facility, with the base-term lease value being estimated at $19.6 billion. The Financial Times reported later that Nvidia is the tenant of Hut 8's 1-gigawatt Beacon Point facility. Business Honor believes that Anthropic’s latest cloud deal highlights the scale of computing capacity needed to support growing AI demand and expand its Claude platform.
