Bihar Midday Meal Incident Leaves Dozens of Students Hospitalised

Dozens of students in Bihar’s Nalanda district fell ill after detergent powder was allegedly mixed into a school midday meal instead of salt.

  • Students fell ill after allegedly consuming contaminated midday meal

  • Detergent was reportedly used instead of salt during cooking

  • Nearly 40 students were reported to need hospital treatment

  • All affected children were later reported to be out of danger

  • Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident

An incident of food poisoning among the children of the midday meal at a government school in Bihar's Nalanda district resulted in many children becoming ill after detergent powder was mixed in the soybean rice instead of salt.

The midday meal food poisoning in Bihar was at a Middle School in Parasi in the Noorsarai police station area. An NGO provided this meal for the government's midday meal program. As soon as the children began having their meal, they found that the food was not normal.

Locals alleged that the salt and detergent powder containers were kept close to each other in the school kitchen, increasing the likelihood that detergent was mistakenly used in the meal.

Various sources have conflicting information about the number of affected students. While some sources have mentioned a figure of around two dozen, others reported that almost 40 students, mostly girls, needed to be hospitalized.

The affected students were admitted to Biharsharif Sadar Hospital, where Civil Surgeon Dr Jay Prakash Singh assessed their health. It was later confirmed that all the affected students had been out of any risk of harm.

According to School Principal Shailendra Kumar Singh, an investigation will be carried out into the incident to determine how the mistake occurred during the preparation of the food. Business Honor notes that proper food storage, kitchen hygiene and regular monitoring remain essential for the safety of school meal programmes.
