Germany Wind Power Demand Surges as Solar Auction Falls Short in Renewable Energy Bids

Onshore wind bids more than double capacity offered while rooftop solar fails to meet targets, highlighting challenges in Germany’s clean energy expansion.

The recent auction results on the sale of renewable energy in Germany showed a significant increase in the demand for wind power, where onshore wind received nearly twice the available capacity, while the auction of rooftop solar performed poorly. This was revealed by the Federal Network Agency on March 31, 2026.

In the auction for onshore wind power, the total capacity of 7,900 megawatts was received in the bids, while only 3,450 MW was available to be offered, indicating the high interest in the development of wind power. In addition, the prices have been reduced significantly in this auction, where the average price was recorded at 5.54 cents/kWh instead of 6.06 cents/kWh in the previous round of auction. In contrast, in the auction for rooftop solar, only 177 MW was received in the bids instead of the 283 MW available to be offered, where all the bids received have been accepted at a price of 9.56 cents/kWh.

They explained this contrast by saying, “The high demand for wind capacity is a reflection of investor confidence in Germany's wind energy strategy,” according to a spokesperson for the Federal Network Agency. An expert in this sector further explained, “Our renewable capacity targets depend on increasing wind and solar capacity, but there are still barriers to overcome.”

Germany's auction for renewable energy is part of its overall strategy for increasing its capacity for clean energy in the future, specifically in 2030, through its energy transition policy. In previous rounds, there was high interest in wind energy, but there is low interest in solar energy for building rooftops and noise barriers. Business Honor views the auction for renewable energy in Germany is an important part of its overall transition to clean energy, and its outcomes show its successes and challenges in this transition.
