Historic milestone enables global IoT connectivity through 5G satellite technology for remote areas.
Sateliot has established a historical milestone in the field of IoT (Internet of Things) by connecting a regular commercial 5G IoT device directly to a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite for the very first time. This innovation, in partnership with Nordic Semiconductor and Gatehouse Satcom, represents a significant step forward for satellite-enabled IoT connectivity, enabling unmodified cellular devices to communicate easily through satellite. This working demo establishes great possibilities for IoT applications in remote regions, including oceans, deserts, and other areas that are traditionally beyond the realms of traditional terrestrial networks. With only 20% of the Earth's surface covered by ground-based infrastructure, this breakthrough brings IoT connectivity to the remaining 80%, a vital step forward for industries dependent on global data communication.
The 5G satellite IoT link was established employing a Nordic Semiconductor nRF9151 module, a power-conscious, long-lasting battery device that linked with Sateliot's LEO satellite constellation without the need for any hardware adaptation. This milestone replicates the familiar roaming scenario experienced by mobile networks, offering global IoT devices hassle-free connectivity. The solution was tested as per the 3GPP 5G NB-IoT Release 17 standard and reinforced by Gatehouse Satcom's specialized satellite communications software.
Sateliot's CEO Jaume Sanpera referred to this achievement as similar to Starlink's first mobile phone link, placing Europe at the forefront of satellite connectivity. The breakthrough is to change industries like logistics, agriculture, and nature monitoring, providing new IoT solution possibilities across the globe.
Having a growing customer base and €250 million recurring revenue contracts, Sateliot is well-positioned to spearhead the 5G satellite IoT revolution. In 2030, Sateliot is confident it will have €1 billion in revenue, further strengthening its position as one of the most important players in the connected world of IoT.
