Antim Panghal won bronze at the World Wrestling Championships, making a strong comeback after setbacks.
Indian wrestling sensation Antim Panghal made a dramatic return to the world stage by winning a bronze medal at the current World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. By doing so, she not only made amends for a challenging Paris Olympics outing but also opened India's medal account in the competition.
The 21-year-old grappler, who contested in the women's 53kg, beat Sweden's Emma Jonna Malmgren with a dominating 9-1 win in the bronze medal encounter. Antim's victory is her second successive bronze at the senior World Championships, and she is now just the second Indian female in the game of wrestling after Vinesh Phogat to have done so.
Antim had a forgettable performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she lost 0-10 to Turkey's Yetgil Zeynep and was subsequently deported from France following a scandal in which her sister, Nisha, misused her accreditation. The scandal brought embarrassment to the Indian contingent. Nonetheless, Antim has come back strongly with her full energy, silencing critics through her resilience and determination.
In her bronze medal match, Antim demonstrated strategic dominance. She started strong, noticed Malmgren was slow, and then quickly made several good moves to take her down. Up 3-0 after the first period, she added to her lead and closed the match out with a four-pointer, leaving no possibility of reversal.
Her performance is well timed for Indian wrestling, particularly following India's Olympic bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat's disqualification for failing to make weight in the earlier rounds of the tournament. With this medal, Antim has not just established herself as mentally strong but also made sure that India does not return empty-handed from the championships. Her win is an indicator of her talent and resolve to overcome obstacles and perform when it really counts.
