Multiverse Computing launches ultra-compact AI models for IoT devices, transforming edge computing with innovative compression technology.
Multiverse Computing, a fast-rising AI startup headquartered in Donostia, Spain, has launched innovative AI models so minuscule that they are aptly named after a chicken and a fly's brain. The models, intended to be integrated into Internet of Things (IoT) devices, are world's smallest but powerful enough to support high-end tasks like chat, speech, and reasoning. The innovation of the startup is its CompactifAI compression technology, which significantly reduces AI model size while not diminishing their performance.
Started in 2019 by quantum physicist Román Orús, quantum specialist Samuel Mugel, and ex-Unnim Banc executive Enrique Lizaso Olmos, Multiverse has established itself rapidly in the AI world. In June 2025, the company raised €189 million (approximately $215 million), taking its total funding to around $250 million. Multiverse boasts a staff of about 100 people across the globe and is a leader when it comes to AI model compression and edge computing.
Its two latest models, SuperFly and ChickBrain, show the possibility of its custom compression technology. SuperFly, which has 94 million parameters, is well-suited for on-device execution in home appliances such as washing machines and smart home appliances, allowing voice control without the need for a continuous internet connection. ChickBrain, with 3.2 billion parameters, has better reasoning capability and can be executed on devices such as MacBooks offline and score better in several benchmarks than its larger counterparts.
Multiverse's technology aims to bring AI to more people, allowing the most powerful models to be executed locally on devices like smartphones, tablets, and even home appliances. With major collaborations already in the works with technology giants Apple, Samsung, and Sony, the startup is poised to shake up the integration of AI into mundane products. Multiverse also offers its models via an API on AWS, providing developers with cost-friendly options for AI integration.
Multiverse Computing breakthroughs are transforming the world of AI, particularly in edge computing and AI for IoT devices, reinforcing its status as an outstanding European tech startup.
