Meta paused AI hiring, raising concerns about its AGI plans.
Just a few months after actively recruiting top researchers with huge salaries and benefits, Meta Platforms stopped hiring through its artificial intelligence (AI) sector. According to the Wall Street Journal, the pause, which began last week, also prevents employees from changing teams. The period of the pause is unknown.
This is a significant shift for Meta, that just brought on over 50 AI experts from competitors including Apple, Google, Elon Musk's xAI, and Anthropic. In order to recruit prospects, CEO Mark Zuckerberg directly contacted them and reportedly offered them incomes as high as $100 million. Some prominent individuals, like Andrew Tulloch and Mira Murati, co-founders of Anthropic, rejected Meta despite the significant offers, showing that money wasn't always enough to impress them.
"It's part of regular planning related to a yearly budget and managing the company's expanding AI efforts," Meta said, downplaying the halt. The business promises to be developing a strong foundation for its "superintelligence" efforts. But within the organization, the sudden halt has raised questions about the future of its AI goals, especially its goal to create artificial general intelligence (AGI).
TBD Lab, that focuses on superintelligence; a team for consumer AI products; one that develops the technological infrastructure; and the long-running Basic AI Research group are the four teams that comprise Meta's AI effort as part of an overall transformation. The AGI Foundations team, which led the development of the Llama big language models, was also secretly shut down by Meta at the same time. With competitors like OpenAI and Google growing, the hiring freeze aligns with increased competition in the AI market.
