Ross Graber named CISO of NNSA, providing vast cybersecurity knowledge to enhance national security.
The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) within the U.S. Department of Energy has appointed Ross Graber to be its new Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), as of June 30. Graber succeeds Scott Engelson as CISO, with vast experience in information management and cybersecurity, to the central agency responsible for maintaining the safety, security, and effectiveness of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile.
NNSA, established by Congress in 2000, supports national security through the oversight of nuclear weapons programs and responding to nuclear and radiological emergencies. CISO Graber will be responsible as CISO for strengthening the cybersecurity position of NNSA's large and sensitive activities, such as defense-related nuclear facilities and classified data. Steven McAndrews, deputy associate administrator for information management at NNSA, welcomed Graber's appointment, saying the agency is “excited to utilize his knowledge and experience in protecting critical information systems from emerging threats.”
Before to his appointment with NNSA, Graber was the Department of Energy's Chief Information Officer (CIO) for a brief period, an office he vacated after only two months in April 2023. He previously served as key leadership in private industry and government positions. Graber is a senior director of security engineering with Procore Technologies and director of security at 2K. His background in the technology industry also includes work at Twitter, where he was charged with data analysis and risk management, and at Google, where he worked on security and privacy. Engelson, shifting into the position of senior advisor for cybersecurity at NNSA, has a solid foundation remaining, with Graber looking to further fortify the agency's cybersecurity efforts.
