South African-German collaboration redefines performance art through immersive, nocturnal experiences.
The Night Piece is an innovative 12-hour art experience that unites the creative energies of South African and German artists. Produced by the German collective The O-Team and South African playwright Napo Masheane, this experimental performance combines theatre, music, and art installations in an unprecedented manner.
The show, which premiered in Johannesburg and has since sold out in Lesotho, is now creating a buzz at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda. Audience is invited to be a part of a one-of-a-kind nighttime journey from sunset to sunrise, as they become integral to the performance itself. Unlike traditional performances with a clear separation between viewer and player, Tebello — The Night Piece encourages participation, without any "fourth wall" of distinction between performers and spectators. Everything from gesture to glance and from sound to silence is a part of the live process.
This collaborative work explores the enchanted and transformative power of night, blending African and European rituals within a mystical, meditative space. The performance is a "nocturnal ritual" as defined by award-winning playwright Masheane, as cast and audience collectively create an enchanted place. The characters on stage "live truthfully," being made vulnerable and connected under the moonlit stage.
With intimate performances limited to 20-30 people per show, Tebello — The Night Piece is not merely a show—it is a quest for self, communion, and renewal. As the show takes its final performances to Bloemfontein's Rag Farm, audiences can expect an experience that they will never forget to challenge conventional perceptions of theatre and performance art.
