EDB enhances PostgreSQL to support transactional, analytical and AI workloads within a unified environment.
EnterpriseDB (EDB) is one of the key players in the PostgreSQL ecosystem that has announced a major improvement to its data platform with the release of EDB Postgres AI. This new product represents an important advancement in enterprise database administration since it can manage transactional, analytical and AI-driven workloads in a single PostgreSQL-based system. A key component of the platform is a new query engine that decouples computing from storage and enables more scalable performance in cloud deployments. This engine's support for open table formats such as Apache Iceberg and Delta Lake allows for greater flexibility and combination across modern data systems.
To speed up analytical queries EDB joins Apache DataFusion, an open-source query engine created in Rust specifically for the in-memory format of Apache Arrow. When compared to regular PostgreSQL, internal testing revealed query speed that was up to 30 times faster. Up to 18x cost savings can be achieved by the system's automatic offloading of cold transactional data to more economical storage.
A growing requirement for unified data platforms that can meet the needs of online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytical processing (OLAP) is reflected in this improvement. Although PostgreSQL is still a dependable option for applications that involve a lot of transactions EDB's improvements allow it to be used for analytics without having businesses to transfer data to different warehouses.
With EDB claiming a 6x better TCO and 30% faster transactional performance than Microsoft SQL Server, the platform also lowers total cost of ownership. The change demonstrates EDB's dedication to making PostgreSQL a more flexible and affordable option for contemporary data environments even though it is not intended to replace specialized analytics databases. In a world that prioritizes the cloud this move gives database experts a strong, unified method for handling increasing data.
