India’s Bold Shift to Circular Economy: A Global Leader in Sustainability

India’s sustainability efforts strengthen its role as a trusted global partner for the future.

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav addressed the CII Annual Business Summit 2025 in New Delhi, emphasizing India's leadership in sustainable development and its role as a global partner amid uncertainty.

He explained how India is being transformed away from the old linear economy to a circular one in which the resources are reused and waste is minimized. The shift is being aided by new regulations such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which hold businesses responsible for recycling items including tires, plastics, batteries, and e-waste. From 2022 to 2024, the recycling industry received a huge investment of ₹10,000 crore, indicating robust industry support towards sustainable development.

The circular economy industry in India is expected to create over 10 million jobs and be worth $2 trillion by 2050. Additionally, the government is encouraging eco-friendly living by implementing initiatives like "Mission LiFE" and "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam," which motivate people to support environmental conservation.

One of the important actions initiated under Mission LiFE is the launch of the Green Credit Rules, which incentivize people and companies to take voluntary measures for the environment. India is also developing a National Adaptation Plan to address climate threats, enhance resilience, and enable sustainable development. The plan is to be presented to the United Nations soon.

Minister Yadav has invited the industry to collaborate with the government by becoming a member of the Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy Industry Coalition, established during India's presidency of G20. This forum will facilitate collective learning as well as greener business practices.

India's increasing commitment to a cleaner future not only benefits the environment but also makes it an even stronger dependable global partner.
