Golf GTI Edition 50 debuts with track upgrades, may come to Australia in 2026.
Volkswagen has officially launched the Golf GTI Edition 50, its quickest road-legal hot hatch to date, in celebration of the iconic GTI's 50th anniversary. This performance-oriented special version outperformed even the all-wheel-drive Golf R 20 Years, finishing Germany's storied Nürburgring track in a just 7 minutes and 46.13 seconds.
The Edition 50's 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine generates 239kW and 420Nm, which is more than the base GTI and GTI Clubsport. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 5.5 seconds when paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and front-wheel drive. Performance tires, a redesigned front diff, track-tuned dampers and reduced suspension all improve handling.
The Edition 50 is visually distinctive thanks to its 19-inch wheels, red-accented pedals, black roof, and GTI 50 badging. A GTI 50 steering wheel emblem, red seatbelts, tartan-trimmed sports seats and Racing Green highlights welcome drivers inside. Classic Tornado Red and a striking Dark Moss Green Metallic are among the available colors.
The GTI Performance package which reduces weight and improves track readiness offers performance aficionados even more upgrades. It has an Akrapovic titanium exhaust, stiffer suspension, Bridgestone Potenza semi-slick tires and forged wheels.
The Edition 50 is "under study" for the Australian market awaiting technical feasibility and business evaluation even though production starts in late 2025 for a European release in early 2026. If authorized, it might reach Australia by the end of 2026, providing local enthusiasts with the most extreme GTI they have ever seen.
