Online scams are increasing fast; weak passwords and phishing make users easy targets.
A new report from Google shows that online scams and cyber threats are growing rapidly across the United States. In a nationwide survey done with Morning Consult, more than 60% of Americans said they’ve seen a jump in scam attempts over the past year. Fake websites and mails are tricking a lot of individuals into divulging sensitive information.
According to the report, one out of every three Americans has experienced a data breach. To steal passwords, usernames, and other private data, cybercriminals are employing more stylish and focused techniques. The majority of these attacks take the shape of emails and texts that appear to be from reliable businesses but are actually scams meant to deceive users.
Despite the fact that 80% of consumers think they can spot frauds their account protection practices reveal otherwise. Simple passwords are still widely used by older users, particularly those from Generation X and Baby Boomers. Hackers find it simpler to access accounts using these antiquated techniques. However, younger generations, such as Gen Z are more likely to adopt safer solutions like password managers or two-factor authentication.
The FBI supports these findings, reporting that online scams caused $16.6 billion in losses last year, a 33% increase from the previous year. This shows how effective these attacks have become and why stronger security habits are needed now more than ever. The best approach to keep safe online, according to experts is to use strong, one-of-a-kind passwords avoid clicking on dubious links and use multi-factor authentication whenever you can. Being alert and informed is the first line of defense against frauds, as they are always evolving.
