Secure, offline live translation enhances communication across Apple devices globally.
Apple has launched Live Translation, a significant new component of its AI tech that enables users to converse in real-time in a multitude of languages. The latest release from Apple Intelligence is the company's expanding range of intelligent devices, among them the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro.
Users are now able to translate what they say or type in real-time with live translation, now built into applications such as Messages, FaceTime, and Phone. Communication with individuals who have a different language is made simpler by the translated message, either voice or text captions based on the program.
One of the most significant advantages of Live Translation is privacy. Apple has made the tool to function solely offline, and no internet is needed, with user data remaining on the device. The technology relies on Apple's on-device foundation model, ensuring conversations are secure and quick.
By late 2025, the feature—already supporting a range of languages—will be expanded further. Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Traditional Chinese, Turkish, Vietnamese, and European Portuguese are some of the new languages Apple is planning to add as supported languages.
Through this feature, Apple is enhancing the functionality of its products further for tourists, international business travelers, and multilingual families. For either a phone call or a message, Live Translation assists people in communicating without any language differences.
Live Translation is now open to developers via the Apple Developer Program. It will roll out in public beta form in a month, with complete availability later this fall on iPhone 16, iPhone 15 Pro, and M1 or newer iPads and Macs.
The rollout represents a significant advancement in real-time language translation with private, on-device software.
