Alibaba Cloud expands South Korea data center to enhance AI and big data capacity for increasing cloud demand.
Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing division of Alibaba Group, will launch its second data center in South Korea in June 2025 with a strong focus on establishing its big data and AI infrastructure capability.
This investment follows the company's initial South Korean data center, which opened in 2022. As generative AI services are increasing in usage at a rapid pace, the new facility is planned to address record-breaking demand for scalable data processing, real-time analytics, and cloud-native AI applications.
The company's press release states that the new data center will provide a richer set of services, such as advanced big data platforms, richer database products, and greater cloud resiliency. All these enhancements are intended to enable businesses to gain insights from large sets of data and achieve high availability and disaster recovery.
"Big data is at the forefront of driving AI adoption," noted Yoon Yong-joon, Country Manager, Alibaba Cloud Intelligence Korea. "Our new facility will give our customers a robust and scalable environment to support data-intensive workloads and stimulate innovation across industries."
Alibaba Cloud's growing footprint in South Korea reflects the strategic focus of the nation on AI and data-driven development. The industry of data centers in Korea was valued at nearly $5 billion in 2024 and is expected to double by 2030. With South Korea's high-quality backbone internet and connectivity through submarine cables, it is an ideal place for regional data operations.
The opening of data center also aligns with Alibaba Cloud's wider vision to accelerate digital transformation by making full use of big data intelligence to support businesses in finance and manufacturing, retail and public services and so on.
