Massive ice chunks break off as scientists track rising heat and glacier retreat.
The Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina for its stunning beauty and huge ice walls is now under the limelight for an alarming reason—dreadful ice falls that could indicate the impact of climate change.
In recent times, tourists have watched in awe as an enormous block of ice, approximately 70 meters high, the height of a 20-story building— crashed into the lake below. This phenomenon, called "calving," has been a source of the glacier's attraction all along, with tourists hanging on for the next spectacular crash. However, now, scientists and local guides are concerned. The frequency and scale of such ice falls have increased in recent years.
It did not occur very often in the past 20 years, according to Los Glaciares National Park guide Pablo Quinteros. However, Larger icebergs have started to break off during the last four to six years. This is an indication that the glacier could be retreating more than before.
Perito Moreno remained unchanged for years, even while other glaciers globally decreased due to the increasing temperature. However, glaciologist Lucas Ruiz indicates some sections of the glacier have started to retreat since 2020. His research indicates the glacier now loses as much as two meters of water equivalent per year.
Experts warn that increase in temperature and fall in snowfall are impacting the balance of the glacier. The retreat may quicken if this continues.
While visitors continue to marvel at the scale and beauty of the glacier, the changes remind them of the effect of climate change on even the world's most famous natural wonders.
