Volkswagen's new electric vehicles highlight localized innovation for China’s growing EV demand.
Volkswagen is gearing up to make a significant splash at Auto Shanghai 2025, where the German automaker will unveil three electric concept vehicles tailored specifically for the Chinese market. The unveiling, set for the major automotive event running from April 23 to May 2, is a clear demonstration of Volkswagen's deepening commitment to its "In China, for China" strategy. The concepts will be introduced through the automaker’s three key joint ventures in the country—FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC Volkswagen, and Volkswagen Anhui.
Each model will cater to distinct needs in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle (EV) sector, showcasing Volkswagen’s adaptability to local preferences and regulatory trends. FAW-Volkswagen will reveal an innovative electric notchback model, while SAIC Volkswagen will introduce a B-segment electric SUV equipped with range extender technology (EREV). Meanwhile, Volkswagen Anhui is set to display a fully electric SUV, further solidifying Volkswagen's foothold in the growing new energy vehicle (NEV) segment.
The strategic localization of these models reflects Volkswagen's ongoing effort to align more closely with Chinese consumer demands, significantly accelerating development timelines by over 30%. The company’s strategy appears to be paying off, as China remains the world’s largest automotive market, particularly for EVs. By introducing these tailored vehicles, Volkswagen aims to maintain its leadership in the sector while continuing its mission to become the top international automaker in China.
Looking ahead, the company has ambitious plans to introduce over 20 new NEV models in China by 2027. Volkswagen Brand CEO, Thomas Schäfer, reaffirmed the brand’s long-term commitment to the Chinese market, stating, “Our ‘In China, for China’ strategy has put us on the right path. Our aim is to remain the leading international automaker in China.”
