Panaji's Smart City project finishes major work, improving infrastructure, traffic flow, and the environment.
Panaji will soon be able to breathe cleaner, dust-free air after more than three years of road excavation, traffic jams, and a protracted legal battle in the Bombay High Court in Goa. All significant infrastructure projects under the Smart City Mission have been completed, according to authorities.
According to Sanjit Rodrigues, IAS, managing director and CEO of Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) all significant road and sewerage work has been finished on schedule and in compliance with court orders. He promised that traffic flow would not be impacted by the little finishing work that is now happening. Rodrigues announced that, as of April 1, Central Panaji is free from road closures, barricades, open trenching, and digging under the Smart City Mission.
By May 31, bituminous concrete will be laid, roads will be painted, traffic signs will be installed, and settlements brought on by deep sewerage digging will be fixed. By June 30, landscaping and tree planting will be completed. After concreting, a tiny area close to Café Bhosale Square is still "curing" and will open in a few days. However, because of intricate 12-meter-deep excavation work, a 200-meter sewerage stretch from Tadmad Temple to the STP at Tonca is still unfinished. According to Rodrigues, more time would be needed to complete this portion before the road is concreted.
In the meantime, Ribandar's long-awaited Ro-Ro ferry jetty is finished and will shortly be turned over to the River Navigation Department (RND). Prior to ferry services being launched, the department will carry out testing runs. Residents of Panaji can now finally anticipate easier journeys and a changed cityscape thanks to the ambitious Smart City project, which is bringing an end to the city's traffic mayhem.
